Scaling and root planing
Also known as a Deep Cleaning. This often occurs if you have missed more than a year of cleanings, and there is build up of tartar/calculus underneath the gum tissue. Left untreated, this results in an irreversible loss of attachment. At a certain point, the bacteria that is associated with the buildup starts harming the bone support of the teeth. This is known as periodontal disease, or more commonly called ‘gum disease.’ At this point, Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) of your teeth are necessary to clean underneath the gums and stop the continued loss of attachment.
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease much like diabetes and heart disease, that silently and irreversibly hurts your oral cavity. Please, if you have concerns, schedule an appointment to learn more ASAP.
Side note: Many people express they have heard this to be a terribly painful experience. After speaking with my patients who have gone through this procedure, that is proven to be an urban legend. That is not my patients’ experience, as we will provide proper anesthesia and medication to control the discomfort.
